Fake News – These People Are the Most Likely to Fall for It.
Here’s how to protect yourself against disinformation.
The biggest threat to civilization right now is fake news, conspiracy theories and disinformation.
It keeps the Chinese people blind to the genocide happening against the Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
Russian disinformation may well have thrown the 2016 American presidential election, and it is certainly what lead to a violent insurrection in Washington DC in January 2021.
Fake news is preventing many people from getting vaccinations, even though without these we would still be dying from polio and smallpox.
So, who is more likely to fall for fake news? A recent study at the Strathclyde’s School of Psychological Sciences & Health, has found that it is those lowest in emotional intelligence.
Those who see through fake news tend to have better interpersonal skills and are better able to manage their own emotions.
Here are some of the comments of people who correctly identified fake news:
* “Fearmongering article with no data.”
* “The source is not an official scientific or governmental source.”
* “Comes across as more of a rant.”
People who believed the fake news said things like:
* “The graph shows it all.”
* “The commenter on the post has the same thoughts as me.”
* “My kids are in this position so I completely get this.”
